“Did you ever know that you’re my hero?”

Hux looks up from his data pad with wide, disbelieving eyes; he has a mouth full of coffee, cheeks round from containing his drink and when he swallows his throat makes an unbecoming gulping noise as the contents drops heavily into his stomach.

Then he remembers who that little flattery came from and his eyes narrow of their own accord, “What the hell are you talking about, Ren?”

“You’re everything I wish I could be,” Kylo’s voice is monotone and serious; there isn’t a hint of joviality about it – not that Hux should expect him to be jovial – and that makes Hux… uncomfortable. Because in what universe would Kylo ever say something like that to him?

Unnerved, Hux adjusts the buttons on the cuffs of his uniform and averts his eyes from Kylo’s penetrating and sober gaze. His skin begins to crawl. “If you were like me you’d be rid of your witchcraft, and I’m pretty sure you’d rather die than endure a forcenull existence; you constantly ridicule my position within the order and think my job could be performed to an equal, if not higher, standard by a mange-ridden womp rat; and a mere five minutes ago you told me I look like shit!”

Hux looks back over at Kylo who shows no signs of having heard his protests. He stares unblinkingly and Hux feels a spark of irritation ignite in his chest.

“Are you even listening to me?”

“I could fly higher than an eagle.”

“What the fuck is an eagle?!”

“For you are the wind beneath my wings.”

Hux clenches his jaw, stands abruptly and storms right up to where Kylo is sat at the end of the table. “I don’t know what you’re playing at, if this is a game or a trend or – ugh, I don’t know! But I do know that I hate you a hell of a lot more than I did before this conversation began.”

Kylo watches Hux march from the room, nose held high in a way the general seems to think looks dignified, and wonders if he got this ‘serenading’ thing a bit wrong.
