Okay, so I’m a huge ass dork. Which means I should be doing school work right now, and instead I’m doing this. So I’m tumbling through Tumblr (as you do) and I notice a huge amount of Armitage Hux stuff; makes sense he’s a cool person and super fun to mess with, and there is a ton of potential locked within his character, and we fandom nerds tend to capitalize on that. Anyway, so it got me interested, because to be honest we don’t have a ton of footage of the guy from the movies just a huge amount of fanart, fanfiction, and posts about him.
Point is, what is the ratio of fan stuff to the actual amount of screen time that the new Star War characters have? Well, the answer was surprising. Unfortunately, I can’t use fan art or fan posts because they are too innumerable to count, but do you know what does have an easy sorting system and convenient number stats? Fanfiction!! Specifically, I used Ao3. People do tend to over tag, but it’s far more accurate than the tagging system on Fanfiction.net and I wanted to have a lot of data. I also used IMBD screen time for the breakdown. I have achieved the following results:
Out of a total of 80,325 fics under the Star Wars – All Media Types Tag;
Coming in at the highest amount of character tags at 17,199 fics is Rey. In the movies, she has been in, she has a total amount of 1 hour, 15 minutes, and 15 seconds of screen time. Rounding down that’s 229 fics per minute of screen time.
Now Kylo Ren was a little bit trickier because he actually has three damn tags; Kylo Ren, Ben Solo | Kylo Ren, and Ben Solo. Doing a little bit of moving around with the tags, I discover that he has a total of around 28,126 fics with him mentioned as a character. In the movies, he has 34 minutes and 15 seconds of screen time. Rounding down once more that’s 827 fics per minute of screen time.
(sneaky sorting system)
Our lovable ex-stormtrooper Finn has 12,020 fics he’s tagged in as a character, and he has 49 minutes and 15 seconds of screen time. That’s 245 fics per minutes of screen time.
Poe Dameron has 14,286 fics, and 21 minutes of screen time. Which makes for 680 fics per minute of screen time.
All of this is all well and good, but I want really juicy numbers; give me something exciting.
All right, so the aforementioned Armitage Hux is what started this little post, let’s see how much screen time he has… huh… he has a total of 8 minutes and 15 seconds across 2 movies. That’s pretty low. How many fics does he have?
16,535 fics
Doing the math, that’s 2,066 fics per minute of screen time. Ladies and gentlemen, we might just be insane. Where is all this attention coming from! He’s supposed to be an unlikable space nazi!!!
*deep breath*
In comparison, Luke Skywalker has 10, 839 fics, but has 2 hours and 14 minutes of screen time. That’s roughly 80 fics per minute of screen time. I mean I know ao3 is a relatively newer site, but even taking in some data from fanfiction.net only adds 5,000 + fics (maybe) to the count. He’s supposed to be the main character of three movies.
Anyway, the point of all this was to see where our hearts lie with the fictional characters that we adore. I think that it is pretty plain to see that for some reason we have decided Armitage Hux if too much fun to be relegated as a side character.
Happy night posting.
I ❤ my salty space ginger, I hope we get more of his sass in the next movie!!!
