In an instant, Hux’s nails dug into the tender skin of Techie’s cheek and he shrieked, reeling backwards, clutching his face and eyes whirring helplessly. Adeline was toppled over by his sudden jerk, and Hux stood up from his desk, watching them intently.

“You, little tech, are nothing more than a skinny, greasy, ugly FREAK. You’re no brother of mine,” he spat, then whirled around to face Adeline.

“And don’t think I didn’t see your “daughter” cowering behind you like the defective unit she is!“ There was something in Hux’s hand, but Techie was dry-heaving on the ground so hard his implants rattled and was much to petrified to notice.

She backed away in fear of her father “ father please I’m sorry I’ll try to be like my brothers I promise” she pleaded

“How cute,” he replied, not at all moved by her pleas. “The two rejects have found each other!” Hux’s neck was flushed a dark red, from WHAT Techie didn’t know.

The cuts in his cheek bled over his fingers and all he could think was I’ll be good MaMa, I swear I swear I swear I’ll be so GOOD just don’t hurt me please please please-

His eyes sockets ached and he scrambled to hold on to the first moment of kindness he could recall: that Judge that had looked at him so sadly, and then set him free.

And now Adeline was- the thought made him freeze. Now she was scared, and it was all Techie’s fault. He’d brought her here. A stupid, naive thing to do. Hux wasn’t a good man.

He might not even really be his family, for who could be so cruel to their own flesh and blood?

Techie staggered over to her and covered her with his own body as protectively as he could. Better him beat than Adeline.

She clenched his uniform shirt in fear

Techie leaned down and pressed a shaky kiss to her head as a silent apology. Something flickered in Hux’s eyes, and he clutched the datapad in his hands harder. Lightning quick he typed an order and two troopers burst into the room, blasters pointed at the two hopeless, petrified souls huddled on the ground.

One pulled Techie up by his hair and he gave a visible shuddering sob, trying to reach out to Adeline.

She backed up even further trembling in fear, even s tormtroopers scared her especially Captain Phasma and the FN division without FN2187 there to protect her she was defenseless. She saw them take Techie away “ uncle Techie” she screamed tried her best to run after him

“Knock the child out if you must, but leave the other awake. I’ll have Ren dig around in his mind to see what his intentions were,” is what Hux says by way of dismissal to the Troopers.

The second trooper scoops Adeline up easily and crushes her head against his armour. She slumps and goes dangerously still. Techie screams himself hoarse until he’s picked up and swung over the taller trooper’s shoulder as if he were feather-light.

“Shut up,” she snaps, and stuns Techie with a special blaster shot to the side of his head. He goes limp with eyes wide; awake but frozen by some strange beam he’d only seen Judges use before.

Hux adjusts his slightly askew hat and slips his gloves back on. “Take them both to the interrogation room.” A pause in which he watches Techie with a curious look. “Ren will be along shortly.”

Techie’s eyes fixate on Hux until he’s carried away.

A medic in the prison deck came out of the interrogation room he took off his cover turning seeing the small fragile child on the interrogation table head restraint. She had gone into comatose when they hit her on the head “ General Hux sir I have news on the girl ” he said with a pained look in his eyes “ the child is in comatose when she was hit there is not much I can do to save her life expect placing her on the needed life support systems to keep her alive” he said placing his cover back on his head and walking to his quarters

“Do so for now. The girl may serve as a bargaining chip against this so called ‘Gen Technical’,” Hux sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose, feeling a headache coming on. “Has Lord Ren been alerted to what his current objective is? He was supposed to be here to interrogate the captive.”

Hux gestures to Techie through the one-way window, bound and gagged on a table beside Adeline. “That captive, to be precise.”

The officer nodded his head “ yes sir he has been alerted just a few -” he was interrupted as Kylo Ren entered the prison deck “General ” he said his attention caught notice of Adeline in a fragile state he clenched his fist “ what did you do to her ?” He asked in anger.

Hux stood his ground, meeting Ren’s furious gaze. “Only what was necessary. The prisoner seems to care for her, so her well-being is the key to get him to crack.” His lips curl up into a smirk. “Ren, keep your personal interests separate from your duties. Regardless of what you may feel for my- my DEFECTIVE CLONE, she and her bug-eyed friend are under investigation for plotting against a General of the First Order. Stick to the plan, Ren,” he hissed, and went to stand next to the window, waiting for the interrogation to begin.

He was furious he knew the bond he shared with the small fragile child he approached the child her small fragile state he placed a hand on her small head. He saw what she was seeing in coma. Her father took care of her treated her better then what reality for her. He stopped and went to Techie “ unless you want her to live you will comply understand? ” he asked

Techie tried to spit out the gag, his mind an incoherent torrent of flicker-quick memories and unspeakable terror. Hux had ordered him to be quieted after all he’d done for an hour was wail and plead for his life.

Very annoying.

Techie’s eyes widen and he grins. “Oh, I knew it! You look so much like h-him! Like me!” He starts forward like he’s going to hug her but freezes and thinks better of it.

“I think General Hux is m-my twin. He has to be! A-and I’m going to go where he is, so w-we can be a f-family again.”

She gasped “ your my long lost uncle Clan Techie! I know where he is !” Said the 5 year old little girl “ he’s on the finalizer but in order to get on the finalizer you need to be first order personal ”

There’s warmth all throughout his chest; finally, his own family! “We can w-worry about that once we g-get off this fu- erm, horrible planet.”

Instead of a hug, he gives her an awkward pat on the head. “And the c-clone thing? You can explain l-later, when we’re safe for sure. Meanwhile, w-what can I call you besides Adeline? Any nicknames or s-something?”

She looked at the floor “ father insults my name he calves me Aden a boys name I’m a girl ” she sniffed

He grimaces and violently backs himself up into the cot’s metal edge. “Shi- Ah, ow! S-sorry, sorry, Adeline it is!”

At that moment, the woman returns and offers Adeline a cute flowered dress and little sunhat. “They might still be a bit big, but it’s the best I can do on such short notice.”

She turns to Techie and quips, “You’ll need a haircut and some dye too, if you plan on getting away from those thugs.” Another analyzing look at his eyes and she laughs, “Long bangs, maybe!”

Techie breathes a sigh of relief. “Thank you, m-ma’am. I’m Techie.” He goes to offer his sweaty hand in a handshake but she cuts him off and says, not unkindly, “It’s better of you don’t know my name. Safer for me just in case, you know. Please understand.”

He gives her a strange look but otherwise stays silent.

“ grandfather Brendol Hux gives me that look ” she shuddered in fear

“Oh! Adeline, that wasn’t for y-you-” Techie is abruptly cut off as the woman pulls out scissors and gestures for him to sit down on the cot. Somewhat reluctantly, he complies.

For about fifteen minutes there’s nothing but the sounds of snipping as she tames his unruly fiery hair into something smooth and shorter. Once she’s done his hair reaches up to his neck and is shaved close to his skin, except for the long forehead fringe that covers his “MALE” tattoo and casts a shadow over his eyes.

She smiles at Adeline. “What do you think, little one? Doesn’t your daddy look handsome?”

“ he looks nice but he’s not my father he’s my uncle ”

The woman flushed with embarrassment and began to dye his hair a chestnut brown. She made quick work of it, then gestured to Adeline. “Should I dye her hair too?”

Techie thought about it and shrugged. “I d-don’t think it’s necessary. They didn’t see h-her like they saw me.”

“ I love my ginger hair ma’am bt thank you for the offer ”

Techie gave a little snort of amusement. The old woman grinned to herself and said, “Alright then, dear! Now, you two can stay the night here and I’ll have breakfast ready in the morning. But after that you must go on your way.”

Techie stopped combing his fingers through his hair and asked, “Aren’t you w-worried about the people l-looking for me?”

Her eyes hardened, fists clenched. “They know better than to come into my restaurant.” With that she was gone.

After a long silence, Techie said nervously, “W-well…she’s nice. Weird, b-but nice.”

She looked away “ I can’t go back to the finalizer” she said

“Why not?” Techie asked softly, and placed his hand comfortingly on her shoulder.

She shifted letting his hand fall “ I don’t want to talk about it ”

His tentative smile fell as well. “O-okay. But I think life on the Finalizer will be real n-nice, ‘cuz, see, I have here,” he pulls a dog-eared, folded up poster out of his previous pants’ pocket, “Look! This is General Hux, our f-family.”

He unfolds the poster and shows it to Adeline. Large, vibrant words proclaim “The First Order Helps All” with General Hux in the center, extending his hand for all to take, a serene but firm smile on his handsome face.

“He’s a g-good guy, okay? Hux can help us. M-maybe he’s been lookin’ for his family for a l-long time. So that’s why I’m going to find h-him no matter what.”

As Techie speaks, hope dawns in his robotic eyes like a little sparkle. He truly believes what he’s saying.

She looked down and whispered “ you don’t know him like I do he’s a bad man ” she said

Whatever half-smile he’d managed to keep up fades completely, and with a cry of despair he covers his face with his thin, bony fingers. “I n-need t-to believe he’s a g-good guy, o-okay! H-hux is m-my last hope. W-who else’ll want m-me? I’m just a fu- F-FREAK! I-if my own brother doesn’t w-want me, t-then I’m s-screwed!”

Shaking hard from impossible-to-shed tears, Techie takes gasping, sobbing breaths and he curls in on himself, pulling himself up against the corner of the cot. His eyes make strange clanking and whirring noises as they provide artificial tears that can’t quite fall. He makes a truly pathetic sight to see.

She looked at him “ he talked highly of you he named one of my brothers after you he will want you not me ”

He peels his hands from his face and stares at her in awe. With a quiet huff he says,”I-I’m not gonna leave you b-behind, Adeline. S-So if Hux w-wants me, he’d b-better want you too.” The poster goes into his front shirt pocket, and he pats it twice.

Techie rubs his eyes and wipes the flecks of errant rust on his pants. A sigh. “I need t-to sleep. T-today has been… stressful.” He lies down carefully on the right end of the cot nearest the wall. “You should c-change and get to sleep. I left you s-some space h-here, see?” He gestures to the space next to him.

“ I’m used to the floor ” she said laying down

Sadness flickers over his features but he quickly steels his expression, just like life with MaMa taught him. “I am too,” he confesses, more to himself than her, staring up at the ceiling. “N-nobody should have to get used to that,” he whispers.

Slowly, his eyes shutter shut.

She remained awake till she fell asleep

During the night, Techie dreams horrible things; Hux with a blaster aimed at his head, “The First Order Helps All, brother.” Adeline melting away into a puddle of snow, leaving her little gray dress soaking wet and her blue-green eyes floating, staring mournfully up at him. There’s a flash of strawberry icecream until MaMa scoops it out of his skull and suddenly he bolts up, it’s morning, he hasn’t rested at all.

She was already up cleaned and had her hair down “ we should get going ”

With a low groan he eases himself off the cot, back aching and head swimming. “I’m up,” he says, nonsensically. That hadn’t had anything to do with what Adeline said.

After blinking slow a few times Techie’s befuddled mind kicks into gear and he feels the adrenaline of his constant fear flow into him once again, now alert.

“M-morning.”

She nodded her head

They left the secret room side by side. Techie squinted against the sudden influx of bright white light from the kitchen and spotted a huge plate on the countertop, stacked high with thick cuts of meat, steamed vegetables, and had two glasses of ice-cold lemonade next to it.

Without needing any invitation, Techie threw his malnourished self towards the plate and shoveled broccoli into his mouth as his stomach cried out in happiness.

He’d completely forgotten anything but food existed!

She ate silently thinking about her family would they accept her and her uncle?

Techie lets out a loud, contented sigh and wipes food off his face with a paper he’d found nearby. Techie happens a glance at his napkin before he throws it into a steel garbage can, and gasps. Frantically, he straightens it out and his eyes roam the surface. The old woman had left them a note, and he’d covered it in food!

“ what’s wrong? ” she asked urgently

“Adeline, c-can you read? M-my eyes are- they’re- uh, clicking a-and I can’t-” Techie huffs, frustrated, while his bionic pupils twitch and whirr uncontrollably. “Sometimes I j-just lose c-control of them,” he sighs, and hands Adeline the note.

“ I barely can read ”

“A-alright,” Techie says aloud, then adds under his breath, “If I c-can just get these s-shitty eyes to w-work…!”

A few minutes of scrubbing at them with the back of his hands work wonders (at least for now), and Techie reads out for Adeline:

“Friends- Eat as much as you want, don’t hold back! I’ve done everything in my power to help you two get away from whatever demons your past held, and I’ll continue to support you in building your new lives however I can. Take whatever will be of use to you (within reason, of course). Finally, there are a few hundred credits hidden in the flower vase. Take care, and good luck!”

“ Father send me to instruction for a few months “

Techie folds the note and puts it in his pocket along with the poster of Hux. Absentmindedly, he pats it twice before lowering his hand.

“He sent you to reading c-classes?”

she nodded her head

“I h-hope whatever you l-learned will come in h-handy. You know my eyes a-aren’t so good, so one d-day, if we’re in a pinch I need y-you to try, okay Adeline?”

Techie quickly located the credits and tucked them away, feeling guilty despite himself. He didn’t deserve this kidness from anyone. The things he’d done under MaMa’s order, the things they’d done to him…

No, he definitely didn’t deserve this. But Adeline did, so he kept quiet and packed away some of the longer-lasting food into a lunchbox that he’d found in one of the cabinets. Once he swung the long strap over his shoulder, he took one last look around for anything useful.

He spotted some wire bag-ties and, remembering his lost figurine friends, took a few. “C-c’mon Addie. We can’t stay l-long.”

She followed him

Once out in the open world, Techie’s tremors intensified. But if he looked out of place they’d be easily found. Gangmembers sniff each other out like dogs. He took a deep breath and tried to be the opposite of himself; standing tall, confident, assured. Holding Adeline’s hand like it was the most natural thing in the world.

“We need to get as far as possible before we do anything else,” he ground out, words slow and heavy from the effort of taming his stutter. “Any transports nearby? We have enough money, I t-think.”

He winced at his tiny slip up and glanced around, uneasy.

“ we could try the Garrison “

He blinked owlishly at Adeline. “A… Garrison? What’s that?” he whispered, leaning down to her height.

“ the local first order headquarters “

“O-oh. I’ve ne-never been outside, or w-well, not much. So I wouldn’t know what I-it is or h-how it looks like. C-can you t-take me to one? I m-might have a plan once w-we get there,” he says into her ear, keeping his voice steady much too draining.

She nodded her head directing him the the First Order Garrison

They were getting closer and closer. His throat closed up with every step. Civilians, officers, and gang members alike swarmed the streets, each going about their own business.

They may not have been paying attention to the lanky young man and ginger-haired little girl, but in his mind Techie felt their eyes on them.

He couldn’t plan their next moves clearly from how much his head spun under their attentions; his palm got sweat-slick and he squeezed Adeline’s hand harder.

An officer at the garrison advanced towards them “ may I help you sir ?” He inquired he eyed Adeline “ you happen to know who she is ?” He said

Sending a quick prayer to the Force or whatever else out there would help him, Techie replied serenely, “My daughter, sir. She takes after her mum, of course. I have no such good looks!” He surprised himself with a genuine, if somewhat strange, laugh.

“I have an interest in joining the First Order. I’m unmatched in repairs and really, I’ll do anything as long as I can keep my daughter with me,” he adds. Silently he prays once more.

The officer smiled thinly “ name and your daughters name ?” He inquired eyeing her

He blurted out the first names he could think of and pulled Adeline subtly closer, “Gen and Madeline Technical.” Clammy as his hand was, he wouldn’t let go of her for anything. Especially not now!

The officer went behind a desk producing enlistment forms “ First Order Military Regulation demands if you are to enlist and keep your daughter you have to enlist her as well Mr.Gen Technical ” he said

Voice faltering, he asked, “Where will she be assigned?” He grabbed the offered datapad with all the forms on it and pretended to consider the screen, attention truly focused on the officer’s next words.

“ with you where you go she goes too we aren’t savages we care about families of the first order Mr.Technical ”

“Thank you, sir,” he said, fighting the urge to sag in relief. With a few flicks of his fingers, Techie filled out all the documents, making things up as he went along and trying to commit them to memory.

The First Order, Techie thought, must be a pretty good place if they kept families together and didn’t much care about your past if you enlisted.

She saw the same officer eye her talking to another comrade she tried not to think about it but she felt that they knew who she was

Remaining oblivious to Adeline’s fears, he called the officer over and handed the datapad to him.

“I have skills as a technician that I believe will be very useful to the Order, especially on the Finalizer, seeing as it’s very state-of-the-art,” he said, secretly proud he controlled his stutter to somewhat of a lisp.

He HOPED the Finalizer was high-tech, at least, or else they’d realize he didn’t have the faintest idea what he was talking about!

The officer left and came back “ you and your daughter are being transferred to the Finalizer ”

A thin thread of apprehension coiled in the lowest part of Techie’s stomach. He’d been preparing for an argument, some resistance, anything except this strange smooth sailing. This was getting suspicious. He figured they knew, or at least suspected, Adeline’s origins and were easily allowing them aboard the Finalizer as part of a trap.

Taking Adeline’s hand once again, he gave the man a grateful smile and asked, “Are we to depart now?”

Once on the Finalizer, he’d talk to Hux and prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were brothers. Whatever nefarious plans these officers were cooking up would screech to a halt the minute Hux knew. Right?

She waited outside her father’s office

Techie stood beside her, lost in thought and shaking with nerves. He didn’t even try to comfort her or hold her hand, knowing she’d be more uneasy feeling his tremulous touch.

They’d gotten in a cramped shuttle with four other First Order enlisters, two of which looked absolutely terrifying so Techie pointedly looked anywhere else but at them. He hasn’t any idea how long it took to fly to the Finalizer. Four minutes in and he’d begun to snore.

Now, awake and scared out of his mind, Techie knocks on the door one more time.

She looked at him as if she was facing death itself She had to be strong

Something inside the office made a quiet noise, then the door slid open torturously slow. “S-stay b-behi-hind me,” he whispered to Adeline and moved protectively forward.

“You may enter.”

Techie did as the voice commanded on shaky, unsteady legs. When he was a few feet away from the tidy desk, he heard the door slam shut and lock itself up tight. He pulled on the neck of his technician jumpsuit, finding it difficult to breathe in the oppressive, thick tension of this claustrophobic room.

The chair swiveled around so he could see it’s occupant. It was THE General Hux of course, back ramrod straight and eyes icy. “So you’re the technician that won’t stop insisting he speak with me,” he says blandly, gaze steel. Hux doesn’t speak anything like Techie; the accent is off, and he pronounces things so clearly, not a stutter or lisp to be heard.

“I-…I am.” Techie feels Adeline grip his pant leg. In a gesture so natural it’s automatic, he puts his hand on her thin shoulder.

“From all your previous hollering it would appear you truly believe we are related,” Hux smiles. It’s different from the serene smile on the poster. There’s a hard edge to it, something cold and glinting.

Unsure what to respond, he bows his head low and says, “Y-yes, s-sir.”

She hid behind him she didn’t want to face her father she feared him since she was born. He never loved her or accepted that she was his only daughter.

“Come closer,” Hux practically cooed. “I don’t bite.”

Techie shuffled over so he was pressed up against the edge of the desk.

“Closer,” Hux breathed, and he smelled like clove cigarettes. Obediently, he leaned forward until he was almost nose-to-nose with his brother. He willed his body to stop shaking but it betrayed his anxiety, trembling all the harder.

Eyes locked on Techie’s own, Hux’s gloved hands divested each other and one slid out to touch the skin of Techie’s cheek.

Sadness flickers over his features but he quickly steels his expression, just like life with MaMa taught him. “I am too,” he confesses, more to himself than her, staring up at the ceiling. “N-nobody should have to get used to that,” he whispers.
