Techie understands just how precarious the situation is. A wrong move will likely scare her off. He hangs his head, red locks falling over his eyes, and says, “I’ll try, um, I… I promise.” Now, the only question is when they’ll engage her.

He smiled and reached out, squeezing Techie’s hand. “So will I, then,” he said. “I will arrange everything, okay? And let you know when we can move to meet her. I will make sure to make it soon.”

Techie resolves himself to wait patiently. He throws himself into work, into the daily complexities of life in the First Order, always having that question of “When?” nagging at the back of his mind.

Finally, he received the summons he’d been waiting on.

Here’s where the doubt creeps in once more. “I… I dunno, honestly. That planet m-might not like having the Order hanging around.” He bites at his bottom lip, thinking. “What’s th-the safest choice?” Techie can’t bear to lose Hux, not when they’ve just gotten reunited.

He nodded. “We can send covert spies if we don’t want our presence to be known. We want her to be safe, too, I would assume. We do want to bring her here, right? Or were you thinking about going down for a visit?”

“It’s best if we go d-down. Being suddenly sent up to s-some random ship can’t be too t-terribly fun, I don’t think!” Techie almost smiles remembering his own introduction to the Finalizer. He’d been scared shitless! Better for their mom to meet them on familiar territory.

Techie slumps before sagging over and pressing his cheek to the cool, hard surface of the table. He knew Hux didn’t mean any harm, but his enthusiasm had been somewhat dampened. “But I f-found something,” he says quietly, almost a whine.

“Oh?” Hux asked, smiling and running his fingers lightly through his brother’s hair. “That explains it a bit. Can you promise me to catch some sleep after you tell me, though?”

Techie perks up, sitting straighter and propping his face up on his elbows. “I promise! L-Listen, Armie: I was able to narrow down m-mom’s location to a manageable area! All I h-had to do was triangulate the most recent data points and then narrow and refine the search results-”

He spoke progressively faster with an excited tint to his cheeks, tripping over his words in a hurry to rush them all out so Hux could hear.

He looked down at himself and let out a nervous laugh. “Oh, y-yeah… I am. Sorry!” Techie sat down on shaky legs and ran a hand through his tousled hair anxiously. “I’m n-not all that hungry,” he admits, placing the datapad down on the table.

He shakes his head, thinking. “Can I… Can I try first? If all else f-fails, we can bring in the big guns later. I just. This is s-something that I feel like should be done by her family.” It seems less impersonal that way.

“She’s going to l-love us, Armie. Something tells me so,” he says, gazing down fondly at his empty drink as if it held all the answers. “I’m s-sure of it.”

The rest of the evening passed by in peace; the brothers bonded until late and then retired to their own quarters. But Techie’s mind was in overdrive. He made plans, rounded up leads, calculated probabilities until even his mech eyes got tired and he fell asleep, datapad clutched to his chest like a prize.

In the morning, he’d report his modest findings to Hux.

In the morning, Hux was sipping his caf in the mess hall. He didn’t expect his brother to already have anything to report, or even to see him. Instead, he enjoyed the silence before the rest of the officers would shuffle in.

Techie awoke with a start only to realize that today he had the night shift. He could afford to sleep in. As he was about to doze off again, the datapad shifted and an edge poked him right between the ribs. That was enough to bring him back from the brink. Mind hazy, Techie slid off the bed and stretched…

Oh! Hux! That’s right- he needed to speak to him ASAP! A quick glance at the chrono made Techie’s anxiety spike. If he didn’t leave now, Hux would begin work and then be too busy for him until late, and Techie was too excited to leave this for later.

He didn’t bother with eating, dressing, or taking a sonic; Techie ran out of his quarters with the datapad and made a beeline for where he knew Hux usually was right now: The mess hall.
