He shakes his head, thinking. “Can I… Can I try first? If all else f-fails, we can bring in the big guns later. I just. This is s-something that I feel like should be done by her family.” It seems less impersonal that way.

“If you wish, of course,” Hux said softly. His brother was his one weak spot, if he was being honest to himself, and he would do anything for him.

“I will forward all of the intel I have on her to you. Do you need any additional resources?”

Techie drinks the last of the root beer with unprecedented enthusiasm before replying, “I sh-should be fine! If not I’ll l-let you know.” On his upper lip is some of the drink’s foam, making him look years younger and more childlike. Indeed, it’s been quite a while since he’s been this happy.

His brother, having a home, and now possibly having their mom back in their lives? Perfect. Utterly perfect. Nothing could go wrong; Techie felt on top of the world!

These were heavy worries for one man to carry alone. Techie bites at his bottom lip, working it between his teeth as he considered what Hux had said. “We… we d-don’t know any of that for sure unless we meet her,” he says gently, as though he’s afraid of upsetting him further. “It’s never knowing and wondering or, um, finding out from h-her personally.”

“You’re right, of course,” he sighed. “And with father gone, there really is no reason to not find her, I suppose… So if that’s what you want, that is what I’ll do. It… *It really could be nice, if we were all together again.”

Techie’s face can’t contain the huge smile that breaks out. “This is great! I can start digging up p-possible matches ASAP. You told me once th-that she’s from, um, Arkanis? That’s where we grew up?”

He blows bubbles into the root beer with his straw, cheeks still dimpling from his grin.

Techie can’t help the quiet gasp. What could possibly make Hux think that their mother would despise him? “What…? There’s n-no way she’ll hate you,” he argues. “You’re an important man wh-who made something of himself! How is that anything to be ashamed of?”

Techie takes the drink gratefully and latches onto the edge, guzzling it down with clear enthusiasm and a wide smile. His manners could use some improvement.

“Armitage… h-have you ever wanted to find our mom? Our real mom?” Something about this scene, the two of them together and drinking, felt so domestic and warm. Suddenly it felt wrong to be here without her.

Hux lookd at his whiskey and sipped it.

“As far as everyone is concerned, our mother was our father’s wife,” he said slowly. “I haven’t checked where our birth mother is now. Is… Is this something you would like me to do for you?”

Techie slipped his hand over Armitage’s, eyes warm. “Not for me. For us! Having each other in our l-lives again… It’s amazing, Armie. Don’t you think if would be nice to h-have us all together again?”

“Is there… r-root-beer?” He perks up once it occurs to him to ask. It was one of the only upsides to Mega City One. There was always something sugary to drink, and Techie quickly claimed root-beer as his all-time favorite, with sweet tea a close second. But… wait. Does Hux even know what that is? Is there root-beer in space?

Techie sighs heavily. “N-No, this is my fault. I should’ve told you s-sooner! But I was embarrassed…” He’d been sober and clean since he’d gotten onto the Finalizer, mostly out of a lack of addictive substances to work with. But this whiskey? It was temptation. “Wh-where I was before, everyone was always drinking, and if you weren’t, y-you were a c-coward. I know that isn’t true, b-but sometimes…”
