Techie perked up, and his deathgrip on the datapad loosened. He shifted so he faced Armitage and tried to stop the muscles in his face from doing that embarrassing grin he hated. “Wh-what did he say? Oh stars, I’m still so s-scared!”

“No need to be scared,” Hux smiled. “We had a polite chat in which he told me to go stuff myself. He also said I am in no position to tell him who to get close to. I believe he blushed. It’s as close as a confession of interest as Ren could possibly get. I am sure he likes you quite a lot.”

Techie gaped uselessly for three seconds until he threw himself back onto the bed with an “Oof!” Out of his mind with glee, he laughed and squirmed around, knocking the blankets onto the floor. “This is the b-better news than I expected!” Techie grins.

Hux smiled and sat down next to him.

“I am glad you see this as good news,” he nodded. “Will you be okay going from here on your own?”

Quick as a whip, Techie sat up and nodded enthusiastically. He looked approximately 78% more alive and alert than before. “I’m going to t-try and ask him out on a date,” he says, hopeful.

“Do you think you c-could… scope out the, um, situation? See what he th-thinks of me? If… If I had to ask, I’d die!” Techie held himself in a protective hug, hands on his shoulders and crossed over his chest. “I’m a l-little scared he won’t like me back, but… it’s b-better to know than to wonder. R-right?” He didn’t look so sure.

“I suppose so,” he said slowly. The idea of asking Kylo Ren, Master of the Knights of Ren and Supreme Leader Snoke’s apprentice if he liked his brother was a little surreal. But what he wouldn’t do for family?

“I will let you know.”

“Thank you, Armie! In the m-meantime, I’ll be extra nice to him.” Techie gives a dopey grin and nearly does a little dance with joy.

“This is g-good! So exciting! I’ve never, um, even had the hope of having somebody like me. Before now!”

“I’m glad you feel so good now,” Hux smiled. There was an inkling of anxiety forming inside of him. He hoped the knight wouldn’t break his brother’s heart and spirit. Oh, he would talk with him to make sure this didn’t happen. “Don’t you worry. Now is… Is a time for all new possibilities for you. You’ll see.”

A few days later, Techie anxiously held a datapad to his chest, waiting for the telltale chime that would signal the completion of Hux’s “mission”. While Hux hadn’t said if he’d come by in person or contact him some other way, Techie hoped it wouldn’t be a physical meetup. He looked like a mess right now, the suspense keeping him on edge and without much sleep.

Hux decided it would be better to do this sort of thing in person and he knocked on Techie’s door, walking in as soon as he heard his brother’s voice.

He opened his eyes to talk about his “mission”, but stopped when he saw his brother.

“Billy,” he said. “Are you okay?”

Like something out of a horror movie, Techie sloooooowly craned his head up to meet Armitage’s gaze. The darkness of the room was interrupted only by the glow from the datapad and a strange light coming from his irises- a reflection?

“I’m so nervous I c-couldn’t sleep,” he confesses, looking eerie and owlish in the dark.

“Oh dear,” he said and sat down next to his brother. “I’m sorry. Are you okay? didn’t know you’d drive yourself to such a state. I think I am bringing good news, too.”

“Well, we work together and he never offered to ease my stress. I suppose when we work together, we must butt heads,” he frowned. “So he is… helping you? Really? I never expected this sort of behavior of him…”

Techie’s pupils dilate with a loud whirr and a cherry-color flush rises on his cheeks. “So that’s n-not something he’d normally do? Do you think that means he…” He swallows hard and continues in a squeak, “L-Likes me too?”

Techie’s gaze darts across the room like he’s scanning for cameras or listening devices. After a pregnant pause, he whispers, “Armitage, I… I like men.” He swallows dryly and clutches at the hem of his oversized yellow sleeves.

All in one rushed, breathless gasp, Techie blurts, “I’m s-sorry! I don’t know h-how the First Order feels in th-these matters-! B-but I’ll keep it quiet if y-y-you w-want me to! I swear! Or I can l-leave if that’s not okay!” His voice is high and desperate as he frantically reaches for Hux, seeking his touch in reassurance.

“It’s- um…” Techie bites his bottom lip and shifts his weight from side to side. This part might be even harder than coming out.

What if Armitage disapproves? He doesn’t think he could handle that! Only recently has he let himself hold some hope in his heart, to let himself dream.

And most of his daydreams are about…

“Kylo Ren.”

“It was a good thing that Hux wasn’t drinking or he would have spit out the drink in surprise. He must have misheard it, right? The shock on his face was evident.

“Kylo Ren?” As if repeating the name would change it. “How? Why? Doesn’t he drive you insane?” Was there a side to that buffoon that Hux didn’t know?

Techie looks surprised as well. “Insane? N-no, not at all! He’s been nothing but a gentleman, and, um, Commander Ren has even been helping m-me with my anxiety!”

Did he not act the same with Armitage? “Is he, uh, n-not nice to you?”
