Young Man With a Horn
Music was a constant in the Hux household, whether it was symphonies on the radio or Brendol playing the piano for get-togethers. And as of his ninth birthday, the sound of young Armitage practicing his saxophone.
Brendol resented Armitage’s constant playing, especially when his son got older. Whenever there was a get together at the home, Brendol would go to the piano and play songs for people to sing along to. Armitage would escape for a little while to his room, and come back with that horrid thing dangling from a strap on his neck, as well as some sheet music that usually had the word “blues” or “swing” written on it.
Although Brendol was against the idea of his son playing in front of the dignitaries, they would be on the boy’s side, saying things like “let the boy play!” Armitage would smile lightly, place the music on a stand, take a breath, close his eyes and play. Most of the time they were soft pieces or parlor melodies, but once he played some loud and vulgar music called “jazz” for the amusement of the guests. Brendol was furious.

“Lachlan “Clan Techie” Hux seemed to be a polar opposite of his brother Armitage… he was a soft-spoken mechanic, Armitage was a general who always was at the front of the big band…“
"By simply watching Hux and the others in the band, Techie mastered the alto saxophone…”
Moodboard: Techie in “Swing”

[Swing AU] Hux walked into the band’s rehearsal space when he heard someone playing a saxophone- only to find it was Techie, playing beautifully like no one’s business. “Techie, how did you get in here?! Where did you get that saxophone?!”
Techie squeaked and almost dropped it, catching it again and steadying it upon his lap. “H-Hux! I, ah, I j-just- wanted t-to try it,” he said weakly, eyebrows scrunched up together.
After a little pause, he asked, cautiously optimistic, “W-was I any g-good?”
“O-okay,” Techie nodded, determined. He wouldn’t screw this up for anything. “Sh-should I…start n-now?” He looked around with wide eyes before taking his instrument and clutching it to his chest.

With some trepidation, he gently took her hand and kissed the top of it as quick as he could. When he pulled back his entire face was alight. “I’m honored t-to be in the band w-with all of you, and I won’t l-let you down!”

He suddenly felt too hot in his own skin. “Uh, Miss Phasma, h-hello!” Techie offered her his hand but suddenly whipped it back towards him, then looked like he was caught between kissing her hand and doing a curtsy.
He settled for just slapping a rigid, toothy smile on his face and standing frozen in front of her.
Women always made him extra nervous.

Turning bright red, Techie lifted up his hand to give everyone a shy wave. “Hah… Hux, I d-don’t think anyone w-will bother me but I appreciate the s-sentiment,” he said softly, evading the other band member’s eyes.
Techie stood awkwardly in front of the band, unsure if he should go around and meet everyone himself or if they’d come to him. He was really hoping for them to approach him first, that way all he’d have to do would be smile and nod.

Techie’s face breaks into a huge, uninhibited grin. “Thank you! Oh, thank you, H-Hux! I’ll be there, I s-swear!” He takes a few reeds and puts them in the pocket of his mechanic overalls, dashing out to return to work.
