Day 30: Eyes – Window to the Soul

TAG: Descriptions of eye surgery.

Techie can only be brave enough to face this surgery if Matt is there with him. Because Techie can only do this if he’s awake the whole time.

At last, the final day! My enormous love and thanks to @unremarkableawakening for starting this challenge and @atlinmerrick for encouraging me to take part!

Techie knows it’s asking too much. He’s asking Matt way much
more than he should, however much he knows Matt loves him. If Matt says no,
that’s okay. He’ll manage. It’s just that… it frightens him. Letting people
mess with his eyes.

“Of course I will.” Matt doesn’t even hesitate.

“It’s too much,” Techie says.

“No it isn’t.”

“Nobody likes to see that sort of thing.”

“I won’t be watching it,” says Matt staunchly, “I’ll be
looking you in the other eye and talking to you. We don’t have to pay attention
to… the other thing. If we don’t want to.”

Techie is pretty damned sure he’ll be paying attention. Once
his questioning determined it was both possible and safe, that was the only
choice for him to make.

He’ll be awake for the entire surgery to treat his mech-eyes
with a compatible organic casing so that his body stops trying to reject the
implants. First the left eye, and once that’s back in his head and working
properly, the right. All in one sitting. All under a strong local anaesthetic
while he stays awake and is therefore not helpless.

During the first few hours of sleep he’d gotten in stars knows how long, Techie had a dreamless, comforting rest. He kept perfectly still and practically fell into a coma… but then slipped in the memories.

MaMa’s face hovering over him, the split second of ice cold terror between her fingers darting towards his eyes and feeling them carving his eyes out of their sockets, screaming,  so much screaming, he can’t-  HE CAN’T

Techie awakes with an inhuman shriek and throws off the covers, scrambling to his feet before he can realize where he is.

Sensing the shift in Armitage, the ghost of their past seems to flicker over Techie’s face: for a moment, his shoulders straighten up and there’s a confidence to him he’d held before. A split second later it’s gone.

“I’m… lost, r-really. But calmer, too. You killed her! Thank you so m-much! That woman was the source of all m-my nightmares.” Techie looks like he wants to pull Hux into a hug but decides against it last minute.

“You’ve done w-well for, um, yourself. Really good.” Now he does manage the smile from before, weak but sincere.

“No don’T -”
The technician throws his arms up defensively at the invasion and sucks in a frantic breath.
“DO N-n-NOT TOUCH ME!” His wailing voice breaks and his hands ball into fists, nails digging into his own palms.
Sudden unconsented touches always remind him of Her. Memories of violating hands and a cruel blade hovering behind his work chair waiting for him to make a mistake- and he always makes mistakes- stupid STUPID BOY-
Techie realizes he’s started shaking uncontrollably.
“Why- why would you do th-that?”
Techie can barely breathe as he attempts to forcefully blink his eyes and remind himself that he is not- and never will be- back in Peachtrees. Trauma grips his lungs within his chest and it burns terribly until he becomes aware he hasn’t taken a breath.
Techie does not like to be touched, certainly not suddenly and intimately without his permission; it’s as if the breif contact has burned him.
It is entirely too long before he manages a shuddering inhale.

All the kylux-based ships (techienician, benarmie, clydeland, etc) make me think that each one is like a different chapter of a reincarnation fic.

His jaw fell, and water almost spilled over his clothes. “A commander?” Techie repeated, surprised. “You’ve b-been busy while I was gone.” Aiming for a smile, it falls flat and ends up more of a lopsided grimace.

Sarah felt her lip quiver and she tried her damndest not to cry. Her heart felt like it shattered into a million pieces, or like it wasn’t there at all. She swallowed again trying to keep the tears at bay. “Y-y-you-“ and then she broke. Tears streamed down her face, she took her hands out of techies grip and covered her face with them. She silently sobbed, unable to make any sort of sound. She opened her mouth to speak, but nothing came out. She knew him loving her was too good to be true.

Techie dissolved into a fit of panicked, incoherent stutters. He tries to take Sarah into his arms but stops himself before they touch. “S-Sarah, h-holy shit! P-please listen to me, p-please don’t cry!” It tears him up to see her like this, but even worse is knowing it’s his fault.
